ITALIAN WOMEN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD
Salvatore Catalano is an artist who communicates through vivid and realistic portraiture. He has drawn more than four hundred portraits of people of distinction and merit. Catalano became a professional artist and illustrator at the age of sixteen, and since then, he has collaborated with prestigious clients in publishing and advertising. His artwork is in numerous corporate and private collections.
Salvatore Catalano’s interest in his heritage led to years of reading Italian literature and history. The portrayal of men through the centuries was well documented - though the portrayal of women was not. He felt a responsibility to give attention to extraordinary and often overlooked Italian and Italian-American women. These women have excelled in their contributions to the arts, literature, sciences, journalism and government. Through this show, Catalano aims to shine a light on these brilliant women.
“The nuances of rhythmic line, subtle contrasts in spatial relationships, light and shade, and in some cases color in Catalano’s portraits correspond in many ways to works by Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Veronese and a host of other precedents in Italian Renaissance art.”
